Summary: Clapham Park residents enjoyed a museum tour and evening of celebrations for Black History Month
Residents of the Clapham Park estate in South London, along with members of Our Local Social, a resident-led group, celebrated Black History Month with two inspiring events.
On Saturday 4th October, principal curator and Clapham Park resident Miranda Lowe CBE kindly hosted a private tour for 17 residents at the Natural History Museum where she works.
Miranda guided them through a fascinating journey exploring black contributions to natural history and the importance of representation within museums. Experiencing the museum through Miranda’s eyes, both as a curator and a neighbour, made the visit even more inspiring.
On Wednesday 8th October, back at Clapham Park, the celebrations continued with a joyful community evening. Residents shared stories about influential people of colour who have shaped society, from family members and local heroes to iconic figures in art, politics, and culture. These conversations sparked connection and pride as people reflected on their own lived experiences and the legacies that inspire them.
The evening also featured a performance of traditional Eritrean dancing, followed by a delicious homemade chicken curry generously prepared by two of our residents. It was an uplifting celebration of culture, identity and community spirit – everything that makes Clapham Park so special.
MTVH extends our thanks to Miranda Lowe, everyone who took part in the celebrations, and Rise for kindly donating funds to make these events possible.
Miranda Lowe CBE said:
“It was a really special moment to have members of my community visit a place that some had never been to before and share the joy and learning together.
“They’ve taken the stories I’ve shared back to the community and that’s what our local social is all about.”
