MTVH maintains Ritterwald’s Frontrunner status in 2025

17 October 2025

Summary: We have reaffirmed our leadership in sustainability by maintaining the highest possible Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) rankings under RITTERWALD’s Certified Sustainable Housing Label (CSHL) for the second consecutive year.

We have reaffirmed our leadership in sustainability by maintaining the highest possible Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) rankings under the Certified Sustainable Housing Label (CSHL) for the second consecutive year.

The CSHL, developed by consulting firm RITTERWALD, is a pan-European, externally verified accreditation that assesses housing providers’ ESG performance and benchmarks them against the sector. We have been ranked by RITTERWALD since 2021 and in 2025, we continue to hold the prestigious and highest ranking ‘Frontrunner’ status across all three ESG dimensions.

Our Social Frontrunner ranking is based on our increased positive social impact and work with partners to bring opportunity and growth to residents, communities and colleagues. In the year to March 2025 the economic value of our social tenancies increased to £1bn from £720m, and £3.4m of financial gains were delivered to residents through money advice.  This sustained top-tier performance is described in more detail in our 2025 Community Impact & Sustainability Report (CISR) published earlier this month as part of our commitment to transparency and sector-wide sustainability leadership

Our Environmental Frontrunner ranking reflects continued investment in decarbonising our housing stock, including large-scale District Heat Network (DHN) schemes. At Clapham Park, our flagship 4,000-home regeneration project in London, one of Europe’s largest Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) DHN is being installed with the scale to connect 4000 homes and 16 commercial customers to low-carbon heat by 2035.

We also continued to improve the energy efficiency of our stock with 439 homes improved to EPC C through retrofit and energy efficiency upgrades including: loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, storage heaters, solar PV and external wall insulation. We now have 25,503 homes rated EPC C or better – representing 82% of all certified properties.

Duncan Brown, Chief Financial Officer, MTVH, said:

“Maintaining Frontrunner status across all ESG dimensions is a powerful endorsement of our sustainability strategy and the positive impact of the partnerships we create across our operations. We are integrating sustainability throughout the organisation from  sustainability linked funding, to how we partner with our suppliers, and the money we invest in community impact.

“We’re proud of this recognition from Ritterwald but we are not complacent and know there is more to be done to meet the goals in our Sustainable Action Plan 2030 and net zero by 2050.”

Ad Hereijgers, Director UK and Sustainability Lead, RITTERWALD Consulting, added:

“MTVH’s continued Frontrunner status sets a benchmark for English housing associations. Since 2021, we’ve seen MTVH evolve its sustainability approach and drive meaningful change.

“Their 2025 ranking confirms their position as a leader in corporate sustainability performance.”
